In less than a week, BMW will debut the latest in its EfficientDynamics and ActiveHybrid technologies, all rolled up in the Vision concept vehicle, at the Geneva auto show in Switzerland.
The goal is to show that a large Sports Activity Vehicle doesn't have to be a burden on the environment — while still possessing the high performance and handling characteristics that BMW is known for.
Based on the X5, the Vision is a mild hybrid motivated by a 204-horsepower twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel as well as a 20-horsepower electric motor mounted in the rear. Power flows to the wheels through a highly refined eight- speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.
BMW says acceleration from zero to 60 MPH happens in less than 8.9 seconds and average fuel economy comes in around 36 miles per gallon, which are very good numbers for a vehicle of this size.
A solar roof provides energy for pre-heating gear oil and thus shortening the warm-up phase, as well as powering accessories such as the audio and climate-control systems.
Other EfficientDynamics at work include brake-energy regeneration and automatic start-stop. The latter shuts off the diesel engine at standstill.
On the outside, the Vision's wheels are smoothed out and optimized for sleek aerodynamics.
