Geneva Preview: John Cooper Works
Hot, hot, hot — the John Cooper Works Mini. Click on images for larger views.

Mini's hot John Cooper Works models will be strutting their stuff at the Geneva auto show later this week.

Both the regular Mini and the new stretched Clubman get the high-performance Works treatment.

Based on the Cooper S, this means a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder upgraded to 207 horsepower (211 in Europe) and 192 pound-feet of torque. An overboost function brings a torque spike to 207 pound-feet.

Acceleration from zero to 60 MPH scoots by in about 6.5 seconds, but slightly higher for the slightly bigger Clubman. Top speed is 148 MPH.

A button next to the gear shifter calls up more responsive settings for the steering and accelerator pedal.

Other racing-inspired specs include a modified six-speed manual transmission, stiff suspension, 17-inch lightweight alloy wheels, big brakes and performance exhaust.

For the first time on a front-wheel-drive vehicle, Dynamic Traction Control is part of the Dynamic Stability Control system. When selected, it allows for what Mini calls "controllable slip" and intervenes at a higher threshold.

With Dynamic Stability Control completely shut off, an electronically controlled lock functions on the drive axle to keep the power flowing effectively.

Inside are a leather steering wheel, anthracite roof liner and glossy black trim.

Extensive accessories for the John Cooper Works Minis include an aerodynamic body kit, rear spoilers, vented brakes, strut brace, interior details and more.

The Works Minis are scheduled for launch later this year.
