Hollywood actor Will Ferrell has become the first to take possession of and drive the BMW Hydrogen 7.

It marks the launch of BMW's Pioneer Program, which puts the keys to an enviro-friendly Hydrogen 7 in the hands of industry leaders and prominent figures for their daily use and evaluation.

"I am immensely honored with the opportunity to be one of the first people in the world to drive, what I consider to be, the car of the future," said Ferrell, best known for movies like Old School and Elf, and as a cast member for several years on Saturday Night Live.

"It's my hope that hydrogen and alternative fuels become more prevalent in the near future."

While the Hydrogen 7 has already made cameos shuttling stars like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to movie events, Ferrell is the first to drive the car long-term.

Twenty-five of 100 Hydrogen 7s that are produced will be used in evaluation programs in the USA.

The Hydrogen 7 is a fully developed production model that meets all the standards for driving on American roads. Running in hydrogen mode, BMW's largest luxury car emits nothing but water vapor.

BMW believes hydrogen will replace petroleum as the long-term alternative to fossil fuel, and hopes the Hydrogen 7 will play a pioneering role in driving forward hydrogen technologies.
