First the 1 Series coupe, then the 1 convertible — and now BMW has revealed a high-performance motorsport concept of the 1 for the Tokyo auto show.

Motorsport means M, right? Could this be the future M1?

Taking its name from the legendary BMW 2002tii of the '60s and '70s, the BMW Concept 1 Series tii is painted in Alpine White with racing stripes, carbon-fiber components and slick 18-inch alloy wheels in a dark chrome finish.

Carbon fiber is used to save weight for the hood, rearview mirrors, inserts in the large front air dams, rear spoiler and rear bumper insert.

Aiding air flow are wire mesh in the double-kidney grille and fins at the edges of the hood.

Much of the interior is bathed in suede-like Alcantara including the deeply sculpted bucket seats, roof and door linings, steering wheel, instrument
panel and gear-shift knob. A white tachometer helps the driver keep an eye on engine revolutions.

What's beneath the carbon-fiber hood is a mystery — BMW is mum as this concept is not scheduled for production.
